The Vasco da Gama pillar is one of the most acclaimed landmarks in Malindi. For most people, the landmark and the town are inseparable. The mere mention of Malindi paints a picture of this eye-catching structure that dates back to the 16th century. Owing to its historical significance, it is one of the most sought after destinations in the town. Every year, thousands of domestic and foreign visitors flock the monument to have a glimpse of its unmatched beauty.
But what exactly is the Vasco da Gama pillar?
The monument consists of a bell-shaped pillar erected on a
large sea rock that is surrounded by water. The pillar is made of original
Limestone material and has a cross on top of it. Besides the pillar, the
monument also has cosy garden seats made from cement that visitors can sit to
enjoy the cool sea breeze. Additionally, it has a wall around it that allows
users to view the blue waters of the Buntwani and Coco beaches.
History
The pillar was built and named after Vasco da Gama, one of the
most successful early explorers. It was built in 1498.
Location
The pillar is located along the beach, approximately 500
metres off Silversand Road. The monument marks the end of Buntwani beach on its
left and the beginning of Coco beach on its right. It also neighbours the
iconic Malindi Pier to the left, approximately 800 metres away.
Charges
You will be charged 100 Kenya shillings to enter the
monument. This is approximately 1$. You may not get a guided tour but there is
a banner containing a detailed History of this outstanding monument.
Operating Hours
The monument opens at 8.00 am and closes at 6.00pm. It is
rarely crowded, so you get to enjoy a perfect view of the pillar. It is also a
great spot to take amazing picture shots as the blue sky and waters act as a
cool background.

You will definitely get enchanted by the sight of the
centuries old pillar as it rests on the rocks. You also get to enjoy the
amazing view of the Indian Ocean. The blue waters make it a perfect spot for
photography. Additionally, you also get a great view of the sunset. It is never
a dull moment at this location.
